Hello!
I’ve been neglecting this Substack and to my 45 readers, I am deeply sorry for that, but I have excuses. Not a good excuse but many, many, many excuses.
I guess I’ll just get into it.
I’m gonna try to use this newsletter more often. I’m rebranding it to “You Love to See It” and I’m hoping, generally, to use it as a place to share good stuff I see/hear/read or even just good stuff in general.
I’m not trying to be post-ironically posi-pilled or anything here.
I just, I dunno… wanna try something different. Re-wire my brain. And I’m gonna try to structure these things like a “newsletter” with regular sections and recurring content buckets and stuff like that.
So here’s what you can expect from You Love To See It, Issue #1
Quick updates about me
A little paragraph about the movie Trap
Perpetual Playlist #1: OK Go Videos You Might Not Know
Good stuff this week
Quick Updates About Me
Things are going steadily over here, in general. I just started a new job, which you can find out about by creeping on my LinkedIn. My kids are doing great (actually Florence is up for a Baby of the Year vote so maybe check that out?)
I also now write the weekly newsletter for KnowTechie, where I make weird little jokes about Elon Musk and stuff (and get paid for it!) Go subscribe – it’s literally only once a week.
I recently played my first live set in nearly 6 years at the Rhode Island Seafood Festival and it was fun! I want to do that again. If you’re one of my friends and you’re reading this and have my number and book shows or whatever – book me. Here’s a video of me writing a song in 30 minutes if you need more proof.
A Quick Paragraph About the Movie “Trap”
About a month ago (I dunno time isn’t real to me anymore) I went to see the movie Trap, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest. It was incredible, even though I’ve seen a lot of people saying the “premise was unrealistic.” Yeah man, it’s a movie. The premises of most movies are pretty flimsy when you really spell them out.
This is a movie about performance and the different ways we play different roles. Josh Harnett’s acting is off the charts here and pretty much everyone else plays their part flawlessly. It’s unrealistic because it’s supposed to be unrealistic. People wouldn’t act like that because this situation probably wouldn’t happen. You’re supposed to be watching the performances. Both the literal, diegetic one on stage from Lady Raven, and the little plays unfolding across the arena.
Without spoiling too much (it should be on non-rental streaming soon), a ton of people have criticized the third act – but I think that this whole section just shows how the performances continue, even when you leave the stage.
Perpetual Playlist #1 – OK Go Videos You Might Not Know
I’ve loved OK Go for a long time now, but when our eldest was a toddler, she was obsessed with OK Go videos. It’s easy to understand why, they’re cool, have fun music, and are very colorful. Most people probably know “Here It Goes Again” (the treadmill one), but OK Go has basically become a creative agency that makes ads as music videos. Sure, there’s a cynical read of that – but the videos are great so get your bag from wherever you can, I say.
“Obsession”
Topline: They basically use a bunch of printers as a massive dot matrix screen to incredible effect on this one.
“Needing/Getting”
Topline: This one is a car ad – obviously, but uhh… what a car ad!
“This Too Shall Pass” (Marching Band Version)
Topline: Maybe I’m just a geek but!
Upside Down & Inside Out
Topline: They filmed this on one of those Russian military planes that they use to simulate zero g. There are multiple documentaries about making this one on YouTube and honestly they’re all worth a watch.
End Love
Topline: This one is sooo interesting to me. It’s clearly from before them getting big budgets to make videos, but this looks like it took at least two solid days to shoot. I don’t know how they did it.
Good Stuff This Week
Episode 1 of “English Teacher” on Hulu – I hope this show doesn’t make a fool of me but it looks like it’s gonna be pretty good.
Sabrina Carpenter’s Short & Sweet – I can’t believe this whole album is about Barry Keoghan
Slow Horses on AppleTV+ – Have you been watching this? It’s on its 4th season. It would probably be your dad’s favorite show, but it’s reaaaally good.
Arsenal 1 – Tottenham 0 – Keep the hope alive.
Alright that’s it for me for this week. Did you like this new version of the newsletter? Let me know in the comments!
